Journal
Not polished. Random thoughts. Behind the scenes.
Idea
What if we charged clients double for every time they use the word 'synergy' in a kickoff meeting? We'd be a billion-dollar agency by Tuesday.
Observation
Just watched a guy in the coffee shop scroll past 40 TikToks in 60 seconds without smiling once. This is what we are competing against for 'engagement'.
Note
If your brand guidelines are 200 pages long, you don't have a brand. You have a compliance manual.
Reading
Re-reading 'Positioning' by Trout. It's crazy how we have infinitely more technology today but are making the exact same strategic mistakes they made in 1981.
Question
Why do B2B companies insist on gating a 3-page PDF behind a 7-field form? No one wants your lead magnet that badly.
Travel
Airport lounges are fascinating. Everyone is performing 'important business person' while eating stale crackers.
Mental Model
Stop trying to be 1% better than the competitor. Try to be 100% different. Different is memorable; better is debatable.
Idea
We should build a 'kill switch' for ad campaigns that automatically pauses them if the creative uses the phrase 'disrupting the industry'.
Note
Staring at a blank Figma canvas is terrifying. The first rectangle is always the hardest.
Observation
It's wild how many companies spend $100k on a website redesign but won't spend $500 on a decent copywriter. Beautiful garbage is still garbage.
Question
If everyone is using the same AI to write the same blog posts to rank for the same SEO keywords... who is actually reading it?
Reading
Reading David Ogilvy's letters. The man had zero patience for vanity metrics. He'd have a heart attack if he saw a modern social media dashboard.
Idea
We need a new metric: 'Time spent confusing the customer.' If it's over 3 seconds on the homepage, you lose.
Note
I spent 4 hours today arguing about the exact hex code of a button. The user will literally never notice. I am part of the problem.
Observation
Saw a billboard today with 4 different fonts, 3 calls to action, and a QR code you can't scan while driving. Someone paid $10k for that.
Travel
Working from a hotel lobby in Tokyo. The ambient noise here is so much more productive than the silence of a home office.
Question
When did we all agree that every SaaS website must have a dark mode toggle and a purple gradient?
Mental Model
Marketing is just applied psychology with a budget.
Idea
Let's ban the word 'solutions' from all B2B marketing. If you can't explain what you do without saying 'solutions', you don't know what you do.
Note
Just had a client ask if we can 'make it pop'. I died a little inside.
Observation
The most successful founders I know are obsessed with customer support tickets, not marketing dashboards.
Reading
Reading about the history of the Michelin Guide. The ultimate content marketing play. They created a guide to sell more tires. Genius.
Question
Why do we assume consumers care about our 'brand story'? Most of them just want the product to arrive on time.
Idea
A 'Wall of Shame' in the office for the worst cold emails we receive. Currently, 'Hope this email finds you well' is winning.
Note
You can't automate empathy. Stop trying to scale your customer relationships with chatbots.
Observation
The irony of 'growth hacking' is that it rarely results in sustainable growth. It's just a sugar rush for the metrics.
Travel
Delayed flight in Frankfurt. Watching how people navigate the signage here is a masterclass in UX design. Or the lack thereof.
Question
If your competitor lowered their price by 50%, would your customers stay? If not, you don't have a brand, you have a commodity.
Mental Model
Price is a signal. Discounting is a signal. Choose wisely.
Idea
We should start sending physical letters to clients instead of emails. The open rate would be 100%.
Note
I'm convinced that 90% of meetings could be replaced by a 3-bullet-point email.
Observation
People don't buy products; they buy better versions of themselves. We keep forgetting this.
Reading
Just finished a biography of Steve Jobs. His obsession with the internal packaging—the parts no one sees—is the definition of integrity in design.
Question
How many 'experts' on LinkedIn are actually just echoing what they read in a newsletter this morning?
Idea
Let's create a landing page that just says 'We do good work' and has a phone number. I bet it out-converts the highly optimized funnel.
Note
There is a profound difference between being busy and being productive. I spent today being busy. I need to fix that tomorrow.
Observation
The best ads don't look like ads. They look like culture.
Travel
Overheard in a first-class lounge: 'We just need to synergize our cross-functional alignment.' I almost choked on my coffee.
Question
Why are we so obsessed with 'best practices'? Best practices are literally what average companies do.
Mental Model
The obstacle is the way. Every piece of friction in a funnel is an opportunity to build trust.
Idea
A plugin that replaces all marketing jargon in your browser with plain English. 'Leveraging synergies' becomes 'working together'.
Note
It's midnight and I'm tweaking CSS animations. This is not going to move the needle, but I can't stop.
Observation
The more expensive the restaurant, the smaller the menu. The same should apply to software features.
Reading
Reading 'Thinking, Fast and Slow'. Reminded that most purchases happen in System 1 (emotion) and are justified in System 2 (logic).
Question
If you took your logo off your website, would anyone know it's yours?
Idea
Let's start doing 'pre-mortems' before we launch campaigns. Imagine it failed miserably, and write down why. Then fix those things now.
Note
Sometimes the best strategy is to do absolutely nothing. Don't react. Just wait.
Observation
It's amazing how much clearer a strategy looks after a good night's sleep and a strong cup of coffee.
Travel
Riding the subway in NYC. The sheer volume of advertising is exhausting. How do you stand out in this noise? You whisper.
Question
Are we optimizing for the algorithm or for the human? Because they are rarely the same thing.
Mental Model
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. It's also the hardest thing to achieve.
Idea
We should have a 'No Jargon' jar in the office. Every time someone says 'bandwidth', they put in a dollar.
Note
Just launched a new campaign. The silence of the first 5 minutes is deafening.
Observation
The companies with the best product rarely have the best marketing. They don't need it.
Reading
Reading about the psychology of color. Apparently, blue makes people trust you. I wonder how many terrible companies hide behind a blue logo.
Question
Why do we force users to create an account before they can even see the price? That's just hostile.
Idea
Let's host a conference where no one is allowed to talk about work. I bet the networking would be 10x better.
Note
I love the smell of fresh print collateral. Digital will never replace that tactile feeling.
Observation
A customer complaint is a gift. It's someone caring enough about your product to tell you it's broken.
Travel
Sitting in a cafe in Paris. The waiters here are masters of efficiency. No wasted movement. We should design UI like that.
Question
If we stopped running ads today, how long would it take for our revenue to drop to zero? That's our true brand equity.
Mental Model
Don't sell the mattress, sell a good night's sleep.
Idea
A podcast where we only interview people who have completely failed in business. That's where the real lessons are.
Note
Just spent an hour looking for a misplaced semi-colon in the code. I am questioning all my life choices.
Observation
The most powerful word in marketing is 'No'. Say no to bad clients, bad ideas, and bad design.
Reading
Reading 'Shoe Dog'. The story of Nike is basically a story of surviving chaos. Reassuring, honestly.
Question
Why are case studies always so boring? They should read like thrillers. 'How we saved a brand from the brink of death.'
Idea
Let's put our pricing on the homepage in 100pt font. Extreme transparency as a differentiator.
Note
I need more white space in my life, not just on my websites.
Observation
You can tell a lot about a company by how difficult it is to cancel their subscription. It's the ultimate test of integrity.
Travel
Lost my luggage in transit. The customer service experience was a masterclass in how to alienate a loyal customer.
Question
Is 'thought leadership' just a polite way of saying 'talking loudly on the internet'?
Mental Model
Your product is what it does. Your brand is how it makes people feel.
Idea
We should write a 'Terms of Service' that is actually fun to read. Imagine if a lawyer had a sense of humor.
Note
Just presented a concept I loved and the client hated it. Back to the drawing board. It hurts, but it's part of the process.
Observation
The best ideas always come in the shower, never in the brainstorming meeting.
Reading
Reading about the history of propaganda. Terrifying how many of the techniques are still used in modern advertising.
Question
If everyone is zigging, shouldn't we zag? Why is everyone afraid to zag?
Idea
A 'dark mode' for life. Just turn off all notifications and screens for 24 hours.
Note
I drank too much coffee today. My heart rate is matching my typing speed.
Observation
The most dangerous phrase in business is 'We've always done it this way.'
Travel
Watching the sunset from a plane window. It really puts the stress of a missed deadline into perspective.
Question
Why do we celebrate 'hustle culture' when it clearly just leads to burnout and mediocre work?
Mental Model
The map is not the territory. The dashboard is not the customer.
Idea
Let's replace the 'Contact Us' form with a button that just says 'Let's have a coffee.'
Note
Finished a project 3 days early. Feeling dangerously competent.
Observation
It's weird how 'authentic' has become just another marketing buzzword. You can't manufacture authenticity.
Reading
Reading 'The Design of Everyday Things'. It's ruining my life. I now notice terrible design everywhere I look.
Question
If our brand was a person, would anyone want to hang out with them at a party?
Idea
A physical 'undo' button for the office. Hit it when you say something stupid in a meeting.
Note
I miss the early days of the internet when everything felt like an experiment and nothing was optimized.
Observation
People will forgive a bad product if the customer service is incredible. They won't forgive a great product if the customer service is terrible.
Travel
Jet lag is nature's way of reminding you that you are a biological organism, not a productivity machine.
Question
Are we building a business, or are we just building a machine to generate stress?
Mental Model
First principles thinking. Strip everything away until you are left with the fundamental truth, then build from there.
Idea
Let's send our clients a book instead of a holiday card. Something that actually challenges them.
Note
Just had a brilliant idea, wrote it down, read it 5 minutes later, and realized it was terrible. Classic.
Observation
The loudest people in the room rarely have the best ideas. They just have the most confidence.
Reading
Reading old issues of Wired magazine. It's funny how wrong we were about the future, and yet how right.
Question
What if we just stopped trying to scale and focused on being the absolute best at a very small scale?
Idea
A 'Focus Mode' for meetings. All phones go in a basket at the door.
Note
It's Friday at 5 PM. Time to close the laptop and pretend the internet doesn't exist for 48 hours.
Observation
The gap between what a company says it values and how it actually treats its employees is the true measure of its culture.
Travel
Returning home. Travel is great for perspective, but routine is great for execution. Ready to get back to work.
Question
If we knew we couldn't fail, what would we do differently tomorrow?
